While being of a sexual orientation other than heterosexuality has become much more accepted now than it has been in the past, there is still a lot of negative biases against the LGBT community and many challenges they must face in day to day life. This is sometimes particularly hard-felt by the bisexual community, where they may not only be experiencing prejudice from the heterosexual population but from the homosexual population as well. As such, there are many issues faced by bisexuals that merit their own considerations at the time of therapy. This collection of topics, when specifically presented from the perspective of the bisexual community can collectively be referred to as “Bisexual Counseling” or “Bisexual Therapy”.
Many of the topics in Bisexual Therapy overlap with the heterosexual community, the homosexual community, or both. For example, while bisexuals may very easily remain quite anonymous in either homosexual or heterosexual communities, depending on the partner they choose to be with, they still have a period of “coming out” where they define themselves publically as being a member of the bisexual community. This may take a particularly high level of self actualization, depending on the context in which the individual lives, because of fluidity that their identity will force them to grapple with.
